COII | REX COIN Growth & Income ETF

The REX COIN Growth & Income ETF (COII) is a specialized, actively managed financial instrument designed to offer investors a leverage-enhanced, options-driven exposure to the price movements of Coinbase Global (COIN), a major player in the cryptocurrency ecosystem. Unlike a simple stock purchase or a traditional fully-covered call ETF, COII aims for an amplified exposure to COIN’s daily performance (targeting between 105% and 150% notional exposure) while simultaneously implementing a partial covered call strategy on only about half of that exposure.

The COII | REX COIN Growth & Income ETF is a unique product that tries to blend an aggressive growth strategy with a regular income stream, all concentrated on a single, high-volatility stock: Coinbase Global, Inc. (COIN).

This structure attempts to achieve a dual objective:

  1. Growth Potential: Capture more of COIN’s upside than a traditional covered call fund by leaving a portion of the exposure uncapped.
  2. Income Generation: Provide a high, weekly distribution to shareholders by selling out-of-the-money call options on the covered portion of the portfolio.

It’s essentially a high-octane, leveraged play on a single, volatile growth stock, softened—but not entirely capped—by an aggressive weekly income stream derived from monetizing that same stock’s volatility.

Pros and Cons

Pros
High Weekly Income Stream: The primary objective is to provide substantial weekly cash distributions derived from the option premiums. This appeals strongly to income-focused investors.
Partial Uncapped Upside: Unlike traditional covered call strategies that write calls on 100% of the portfolio and completely cap stock gains, COII typically writes calls on only about 50% of its notional exposure. This allows investors to participate in more of COIN’s appreciation potential.
Leverage-Enhanced Exposure: The fund targets daily leveraged exposure to COIN (between 1.05x and 1.50x), which can amplify gains on days when the underlying stock is rising.
Monetizes Volatility: The underlying stock, COIN, is often highly volatile. The covered call strategy on a portion of the exposure is designed to monetize this volatility by collecting higher option premiums, which funds the distributions.

Cons
Compounding & Volatility Risk (Mismatch): Because the fund targets leveraged daily returns, the results for periods longer than a single day will very likely differ from the daily target and can be significantly impacted by compounding and volatility. The fund could lose money even if COIN’s stock price rises over a longer period.
Capped Upside on Covered Portion: While better than a fully covered call, gains on the portion of the exposure covered by sold call options are still capped at the options’ strike price.
Full Downside Risk (Amplified): The fund is subject to the full downside risk of COIN’s price movements, which is magnified by the use of leverage. Losses can be rapid and severe, potentially within a single day.
Concentration and Single-Stock Risk: The entire fund’s performance is tied to the price movements of one single stock (COIN), which operates in the highly cyclical and volatile cryptocurrency sector. This makes the fund non-diversified and extremely high-risk.
Expense Ratio: The fund has an expense ratio of 0.99%, which is relatively high for an ETF.
